When I think about olympic games and videogames in 80's-90's I've mixed feelings.
From one side I've clear memories of me, in the hot of a Sicilian summer, watching passionately the games on TV with parents (probably Seoul 1988) and another me, in the same years with my father and sisters, waggling a joystick to death on Commodore 64 and Hyper Sports (1984, ported on 1985) for days. From the other side I've never found sport games particularly interesting and I prefer watching movies on TV and playing action/adventure videogames.
What changed is the number of the people in the same room: people in groups doing the same thing tends to create some sort of competition between them in ability, ideas, hopes and expectations. It's a good thing, that unites people and pushes them to improve themselves, but I've always found competitions some sort of 'cheating'. It's like RPG-with-anything or online-with-anything in gaming: it makes any game better, whatever that's fun or not. Indie developers already proved it, at least in videogaming, with controversial games like Cookie Clicker (2013) and Don't Move (2013).
Anyway, olympic videogames undoubtedly feed the plastic and joystick market around 80's and 90's so a quick reference here is a must.
Plot!
Time to win the next olympic games and break your keyboard! Swimming: hit the A BUTTON as fast as you can for swimming faster, hit the UP button for breathing (warning: anti-cheating countermeasures taken) and pushing yourself back from the side of the swimming pool. Clay shooting: hold LEFT or RIGHT for selecting a reticle and A for shooting. Running: hit the A button rhythmically - but, as usual, as fast as you can!
